A Web Content Management System (WCMS) comes into play when a regular editorial system is not sufficient.
It takes on all of the functionality of the editorial system, expands this and supplements it for use in terms of extensive Internet presentations and portals, often with a good-sized author’s environment. As opposed to the editorial system, this provides a wide range of possibilities concerning integration with external applications, supports more complex workflow processes and simple preparation of language mutations for individual presentations.
WCMS are adapted for the provision of higher performance, use robust and tried and tested technology and also apply established security standards for the protection of content provided. They frequently allow for integration with Document Management Systems.
Web Content Management Systems are used by companies or institutions, which publish a large amount of content on the portal, in a printed catalogue, on the Intranet or Internet etc. or which administer large amounts of their company presentations (e.g. presentation of individual products). Such companies need a tool, which ensures uniform administration of all work with this digital data during the course of its whole life cycle – from cooperation on creation right through to distribution, publication and archiving. WCMS ensures such services including administration of digital content (texts, pictures and audiovisual files) in a uniform, centralised storage site, which allows for use of the content for various outputs – a typical example is a web, WAP presentation and printed catalogue.
The operator interfaces for WCM systems are user-friendly and very similar for example to the Microsoft Office environment. They are adapted so that all of your company’s employees who have basic PC skills can use them.
In contrast to the simpler editorial systems, a Web Content Management System supports the whole life cycle of digital content, offers a high-performance tools for management of processes with digital content, allows you to publish the content in various output formats, ensures administration of versions of individual types and uses prepared integration tools with internal information systems (e.g. SAP, LCS Noris or Navision). Thanks to precise support for workflow processes and an established control mechanism, it prevents inconsistencies in published data and introduces order into administration of the content of all presentations and company information channels.
The result of implementation of a Web Content Management system could for example be an e-shop, which takes the goods catalogue and warehouse status from the ERP system (e.g. SAP) + and draws all content and documents that pertain to individual products from the WCMS. At the same time, the WCMS can publish the same content in any graphic form whatsoever, e.g. printed catalogues or such like.
