Business portals automate routine processes between entities, which do business or cooperate together. They ensure the “paperless” course of business transactions and the electronic circulation of documents. They increase efficiency and decrease the demands of the whole process.

Thanks to these properties, business portals can also serve as B2B marketplaces (e-marketplaces). In some fields, e.g. in the automobile industry, one single business portal integrate tens to hundreds of business partners and all mutual trade among them. Business portals thus create a global e-commerce marketplace.
